On September 8, 2014, the Broward, Florida, police received an emergency call. Justin Su had just found his mother, Jill Su Halliburton, bound hand and foot, fatally stabbed. The wealthy heiress of an oil tycoon, she was alone in her home. The police began their investigation, first questioning Justin and Nan-Yao Su, Jill's husband, a professor at the University of Florida. DNA evidence was then identified, belonging to Dayonte Resiles, a 20-year-old Black man nicknamed Moochie. He was known to the police for a history of burglary.
